Open Work Permit for Applicants of Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada

The pilot program that begun last December 22, 2014 allows applicants under Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class (SCLPC) to be eligible for an open work permit. This program will be re-assessed after a year, which is a few months from now.

Under this program an applicant for SCLPC may be issued an open work permit provided the applicant meet the following criteria:

  • a permanent resident application has been submitted pursuant to the Spouse or Common- Law Partner in Canada Class;

  •  the applicant and the sponsor both reside in the same address;

  • the applicant has valid temporary resident status;

  • a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident spouse has submitted a sponsorship application on their behalf

The pilot program benefits both the applicants and Canada. The permanent resident applicants are given the opportunity to enter the Canadian labour market. This means the permanent resident-to-be can provide for their family without the need to leave them behind. The transferrable skills and knowledge obtained internationally by the applicants are then converted to growth and innovation in Canada's economy as diversity is being embraced.
